Red Cross is a signed colour serigraph produced by contemporary artist, Damien Hirst. Hirst transforms the Red Cross logo through the use of red spots which he spaces out carefully and with mathematical precision to replicate the cross shape. Made in 2008, the print depicts the logo in Hirst’s characteristic visual style. The grid formation used in Red Cross resonates with Hirst’s famous spot paintings in which the artist arranges multicoloured spots in meticulous grids. The print is emblematic of how Hirst frequently displays a scientific precision in his artworks, blurring the boundaries between art and science.
The print was commissioned by the Red Cross of Monaco (Croix-Rouge monégasque), which was founded in 1948 by Louis II of Monaco. The Red Cross practises interventions both in Monaco and around the world and, every year bestows €600,000 to help countries affected by war, famine or natural disasters.
Other artists that have been asked to reproduce the iconic symbol to celebrate the occasion of the Official Reception of the Red Cross of Monaco are Valerio Adami, Arman, Paul Jenkins and Bernard Rancillac.
