Meaning & Analysis
Blame Game IV is a signed screen print in colours on Saunders Waterford High White paper. The print was made in 2014 by the much-loved American artist and designer, KAWS. In this print, KAWS depicts a close-up section of a cartoon character’s face. The viewer can discern two large eyes which are each marked by two crosses. This is a trademark feature of KAWS’ visual language and the motif has become closely associated with the artist’s name. A large grin can also be seen in the print, along with a large white hand.
Blame Game IV is part of the Blame Game collection, which is composed of 10 screen prints, each of which captures a close-up portion of the same cartoon character’s face. The prints are all rendered in bright and vibrant colours, which reflect KAWS’ love of colour and playful experimentation with it in his works. The bold, gestural lines used in the image are characteristic of KAWS’ artistic style, which was heavily influenced by graffiti, street art and animation.
KAWS started experimenting with graffiti when he was growing up in New Jersey, and further developed his talent for street art when he moved to New York. KAWS rose to fame through his street art and will be remembered as an iconic 21st century artist who was successful in bridging the gap between street art and high art, much like the renowned artists of the 20th century, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
