Meaning & Analysis
Albert Einstein (F. & S. II.229) is a signed screen print in black and white made by Andy Warhol, a leading figure of the Pop Art movement, and comes in an edition size of 200. In this print, Warhol depicts Albert Einstein, the theoretical physicist who is widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest physicists of all time. Einstein is rendered in black, white and grey with half of his face appearing like a faint sketch, while the other half is drawn in great detail. Warhol adds layers of geometric shapes over the image, drawing attention to the various stages in the production of the portrait.
The print is part of Warhol’s renowned collection from 1980, Ten Portraits of Jews. In this collection, Warhol depicts ten famous Jews from the 20th century. The subjects of the portraits were chosen due to the impressive things they accomplished in their lifetimes and the worldwide fame they achieved. Each sitter belonged to a different field and Warhol nicknamed the subjects ‘Jewish geniuses’ due to the mark they left on society.
Warhol had a long-standing fascination with fame and produced prints of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. The subjects of these prints, however, transcend the realm of surface level fame and glamour. Rendering Einstein in his characteristic Pop Art style, Warhol playfully transforms the respected scientist into a 1980s Pop Art icon.
