Meaning & Analysis
Golda Meir (F. & S. II.233) is a signed screen print in colours produced by Andy Warhol, one of the leading figures of the Pop Art movement. The print comes in an edition size of 200 and was made in 1980. Meir is rendered in a variety of vibrant colours, characteristic of Warhol’s graphic style. A precursor to this print, Golda Meir, was made in 1973, highlighting Warhol’s interest in and admiration of Meir.
In this print, Warhol depicts the Israeli politician Golda Meir in his signature Pop Art style. Meir is famous for serving as the fourth prime minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974 and was the world's fourth and Israel's only woman to hold the office of prime minister. In his portrait, Warhol renders Meir using sketch-like lines in bold red and yellow. Colour-fields of layered geometric shapes in yellow, pink, red and blue form the backdrop of this print. Warhol’s graphic style is characterised by his use of bold and vibrant colours, and Golda Meir (F. & S. II.233) exemplifies the artist’s playful use of colour.
The print is part of Warhol’s Ten Portraits of Jews collection. The series is composed of ten screen prints, all of which depict a different famous Jewish figure. Warhol nicknamed the collection ‘Jewish geniuses’ and the people chosen by the artist span a range of disciplines including politics, science, music and literature.
