BANKSY, BLOWPOP002 MATADOR AND CAR, ORIGINAL STENCIL ON 12 INCH RECORD SLEEVE, 1998
Blowpop002 Matador and Car is among the oldest known Banksy original works and is thus considered a highly desirable, rare collectible gem. Apparently, fewer than 100 of these sleeves exist. The black aerosol stencil was created by Banksy for the release of the promo record by the Capoeira Twins 12", produced on a white cardboard record sleeve. The dynamic stencil design depicts a classic Spanish matador character, shaking his cape at a 1970s muscle car with bull horns on its roof. The image is a witty and original take on representing romanticized “machismo” and masculinity, already showing the early signs of Banksy’s signature tongue-in-cheek humour.
Banksy is said to have created the record design free of charge, having befriended the owner of Blowpop Records.
