BANKSY, SID VICIOUS, ACRYLIC SPRAY PAINT STENCIL AND DIAMOND DUST ON CANVAS, 2000
Sid Vicious is an original Banksy canvas, which was a part of his exhibition Laugh Now at MOCO in the Netherlands. It depicts the notorious bass guitarist and singer of the Punk band Sex Pistols framed within a pink Andy Warholesque Pop dipytch. Banksy hereby presents a satire of the values associated with the Punk movement, such as anti-establishment views, anti-commercialism and individualism, since Pop Art on the other hand is interlinked with notions of popular culture, consumerism and the mainstream.
This canvas in particular is clearly inspired by Warhol’s Marilyn Diptych, showing Monroe’s portrait in a repetition of 25 screen prints on canvas.
It’s common for Banksy to appropriate other famous artist’s styles, such as including Keith Haring’s signature dog in Choose Your Weapon and borrowing from Warhol yet again with the Tesco Tomato Soup Can screen print series.
