Meaning & Analysis
Magenta And Green is one in a series of three prints constituting the Magenta series, executed by the pioneering British abstract artist Bridget Riley in 2002. Now aged 91, Riley continues to exert a profound influence on the art produced today as she endures in testing the limits of geometric abstraction. Like the other prints in the Magenta series, Magenta And Green consists of two contrasting, lively hues: magenta and green.
The forms constituting Magenta And Green are identical to the others in the series: parallelograms with elongated, swerving lines. The identical composition of each print enables a further exploration into the visual effects of varying colour combinations. Appearing random at first, there is a perceptible underlying structure to Riley’s compositions, her approach to constructing them both thoughtful and methodical. Since the conception of the Magenta series, Riley has pursued explorations into colour and has continued to develop one of the most recognisable styles in contemporary art.
