Meaning & Analysis

Rose Horizontal is signed screen print released by Bridget Riley in 2018 from a limited edition run of 75. Riley turns her iconic vertical stripes 180 degrees, laying horizontal across the canvas, flowing mellifluously from light to dark which imbues her work with a sense of movement.

Riley’s memories from the places in which she grew up have had a profound impact on her work. Riley recalls spending time watching the changing light, colours and cloud formations in the sky, which provides inspiration for her chosen colour palette in Rose Horizontal. Echoing a sky changing colours at sunset, stripes of light blue and teal provide pause within the configuration of tonal stripes. Indeed, Riley intentionally adopts lighter shades of either white or pale blue to achieve just that.
