Meaning & Analysis

Rose Rose, executed in 2011 in an edition of 250, varies from many other Riley works featuring stripes; in this iteration, the stripes are horizontal rather than vertical. Consisting of 12 vertical bands in varying pinks, purples, reds and greens, a light blue shade provides pause and contrast. Part of a portfolio created by twelve British artists to commemorate the 2012 London Olympic Games, the candy stripes of Rose Rose, indicating the parallel lines of an athletics track or swimming pool, create a sensation of movement, capturing the energy of a sports event.

By manipulating relationships between colour and shapes, Riley creates illusions of movement, light and tone. One of the most original painters of our time, Riley is celebrated for her optically vibrant paintings.
