Meaning & Analysis
No News Today is a signed screen print in colours produced by renowned contemporary artist, Damien Hirst. The print, made in 2007 and signed in 2008, is a limited-edition front page of The Independent newspaper from 16th May 2006. The edition was published on the occasion of World Aids Day and is the result of a one-off collaboration between Hirst and the rock and roll superstar, Bono from the iconic Irish band U2. When looked at closely, the signatures of Hirst and Bono can be seen at the bottom of the print.
The design of the print is simple. Hirst reproduces The Independent logo and newspaper name in blood red and uses the same colour to dominate the front page. In a faint white, Hirst renders a dove, medicine pill and skull against the bold backdrop. Across the front page, the headline "No News Today" is positioned in the centre of the composition. The print rewards close attention as a shocking footnote below the title explains "Just 6,500 Africans died today as a result of a preventable, treatable disease."
In this print, Hirst subverts the traditional newspaper format by eliminating all news stories, forcing the viewer to acknowledge the important message conveyed by the footnote. Hirst was asked to design the front page while Bono was guest editor for the landmark edition. The print was distributed by the Independent newspaper and immediately sold out.
