Meaning & Analysis
This vibrantly dynamic composition brings the traditional genre of the still life firmly into the ’90s, recalling many of the other prints and paintings of this period in Hocney’s oeuvre. Dominated by various shades of primary colours the work is immediately captivating, its abstract forms recalling Alexander Calder’s famous mobiles as well as some kind of tropical or even otherworldly flowers. A lone apple sits at the front of the arrangement, as if to refer to some kind of platonic ideal, or to ground the seeming volatility of the composition. Table Flowable is a lithograph and here we can see Hockney pushing the limits of his medium once again, combining various kinds of marks and effects to convey his unique perspective in print as he would in painting or drawing. This is one of many still lifes in Hockney’s oeuvre and yet it stands out for its qualities of abstraction and it's challenging of tradition which reflects much of Hockney’s outlook on life and art. Here we find the unmistakable influence of LA on his work; when the artist moved there in 1964 it revolutionised his whole practice and arguably made him the artist he is today.
