This picture is one of his more dynamic works capturing various instances of movement, as well as an account of his fascination with crowd dynamics and the individual behaviour within a collective. In this instance there is a fight unfolding between a group of men with various passers-by watching and turning their heads in shock. He uses the colour red to highlight a few details in the painting, such as a figure’s hat or clothing.

 The original Industrial Scene, about the same size as this print, has been displayed at the Norwich Castle Museum since its acquisition in 1971. In this same collection there are also many brilliant Landscape With Farm Buildings works from the 1950s. The acquisition of these pieces was facilitated by the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society, co-founded by David Carr, who was also its first president and a dear friend and collector of Lowry’s.

ABOUT L.S. LOWRY

L.S. Lowry is a much-loved British painter known for pictures that capture urban life in industrial north west England, most notably during the 1920s. Born in 1887 in Stretford, Lancashire, Laurence Stephen Lowry later moved to Pendlebury near Manchester where he lived and worked for over 40 years. The area, which he at first detested, was covered in factories and cotton mills that Lowry would soon obsessively depict. His fascination with the industrial landscapes and the people that inhabited them was inspired by a missed train. Standing on the platform at Pendlebury station, Lowry would later write of the view of the Acme Spinning Company’s mill, saying “I watched this scene – which I’d look at many times without seeing – with rapture.” Learn more about L.
