Biography

Nicolas Party was born on July 1, 1980, in Lausanne, Switzerland, but lives and works between New York City and Brussels. Renowned for his unique approach to art, he is celebrated for his multi-media interdisciplinary immersive exhibitions that have captivated audiences throughout the world. His career has been marked by significant achievements and recognition; his landscapes often draw inspiration from a broad spectrum of contemporary and historical painters, reflecting a deep engagement with the artistic traditions and innovations across the centuries. Party received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Lausanne School of Art in 2004 and later completed his Master of Fine Arts at the Glasgow School of Art in 2009. Since then, his work has been prominently featured in solo exhibitions at major institutions, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Magritte Museum in Brussels, the Dallas Museum of Art and the Hirshhorn Museum.

Party's artistic style is notably characterised by its vibrant use of colour and often Surrealist settings, creating an atmosphere that is both familiar and dream-like. His paintings frequently feature bold, saturated hues that bring a contemporary freshness to traditional subjects like landscapes, portraits and still lifes. This vivid colour palette enhances the visual impact of his work while also imbuing it with a sense of playfulness and whimsy. Party's approach to colour is not just about aesthetic appeal; it also serves to challenge and redefine conventional notions of representational painting.

It was during Party’s time at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland that his unique interpretation of Surrealism began to emerge. His works are known for their vibrant colour palettes and imaginative juxtapositions, exploring themes like landscapes, portraiture and still life – with a surreal, mysterious twist. Party's signature elements include bright colours and bold patterns, and his use of a wide range of vivid hues and unconventional colour combinations contributes to the dreamlike quality of his works. At the same time, his geometric or organic patterns create visual rhythms and dynamic textures. This combination transforms everyday objects and subjects into surreal experiences, inviting viewers into alternate realms where the ordinary is seen in new perspectives. Party's work extends beyond gallery spaces into public installations and murals, like the one created for the Frick Collection in New York City, bringing his imaginative art into the urban landscape and engaging the public in a dialogue of wonder and introspection.

February 2020 marked a significant milestone in his career with his first solo exhibition, Sottobosco, at Hauser & Wirth in Los Angeles, California. Another notable highlight of his career was his second exhibition at The Hirshhorn, during which he created his largest work to date, Draw the Curtain. This exceptional piece wrapped 360 degrees around the temporary scaffolding of the Museum building, covering a circumference of 829 feet. Since then, he has continued to thrive at auction and in receiving commissions.
