Meaning & Analysis
Landscape is a screen print, executed by the British artist Julian Opie in 1990, released in an edition of 40. This highly simplified depiction of an open landscape, trees and a blue sky, generates a pared back perspective on modern life, in which all idiosyncratic details are omitted. There are two types of trees: one pair in a darker shade of green, the same stencil being used in each pair but just of varying sizes. These simplified forms executed in monotone colours, are typical of Opie’s oeuvre. Despite this scene being inspired by Opie’s own experiences, the landscape is totally depersonalised.
Being computer and mathematically-based, this landscape still expresses a desire to escape from a more urban environment. The land in the foreground flat, yet there is a promise of hills in the distance. In this sense, Opie hopes his landscapes depict worlds which the viewer will desire to escape into.
