Meaning & Analysis
Robert Indiana’s Hope is a screenprint that depicts the word 'hope' within a square composition. The H and the O sit on the top register and the P and the E on the bottom, depicting the letters in a red and orange gradient atop a gold background. This print was released in 2012 in an edition of 500.
Robert Indiana’s Love, a message that was conveyed through the same compositional means, was particularly pertinent in the 1960s. He decided, in 2008, that a new message was necessary. Indiana stated that he would “like to cover the world with hope”. The artistic end of this ambition was literal. The work was designed for Barack Obama’s presidential first campaign following eight years of the Bush Administration. He has stated that the forward leaning O is indicative of the perseverance of the younger generation.
This visual composition has been extremely effective. On 13 September 2014 the inaugural ‘International Hope Day’ was celebrated. The extent to which he was integral in the celebration of this is demonstrated by the vast dissemination of his work. HOPE sculptures were produced in Italy, Venezuela, and the United States of America. The use of the four-letter theme has been expanded by Indiana. After producing his famous LOVE works he translated that, producing prints with the letters AMOR. This 2012 print, Hope, is indicative of the longevity and renown of this style’s visual appeal.
