Jane Fonda will be selling a collection of fashion, art, jewellery and decorative arts at Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles.
Fonda, most famous for her Jane Fonda Workout videos, Oscar winning performances in Kulte and Coming Home; and co-producing Nine to Five (co-starring Dolly Parton) she was also at the helm of the first ever transgender production of The Vagina Monologues. In more recent years she has become known for her political activism.
Julien’s Auctions tells us this collection is a story of Fonda’s life, each artifact iconic of different points in her life and career. Some of the most hotly anticipated items of the collection include the infamous 80s red and black striped leotard featured on the cover of her best-selling Jane Fonda Workout book, and a one-of-a-kind Andy Warhol lithograph of Fonda, pictured and estimated at $25,000-$30,000.
As part of his obsession with celebrity and fame – particularly that of female celebrity during the 1970s and 80s – Warhol made the lithograph for Fonda in 1982, and is of her in the character of the iconic Barbarella (1968). To create the other-worldly lithograph, Warhol used a polaroid he took of Fonda as its base. Warhol donated this print to aide a fundraiser for Tom Hayden – Fonda’s former husband (Hayden is best known as an anti-war, civil rights radical political activist).
Other expected favourites include the Yves Saint Laurent Oscar acceptance speech suit for Klute (Estimate: $6,000-$8,000), signed script from On Golden Pond (Estimate: $800-$1,200); a pair of Tibetan cabinets and a painting (Horses on a Ranch) by American watercolourist Marion Kavanagh Wachtel.
The auction, Property from the Collection of Jane Fonda, will take place on 23 September 2016.
