Meaning & Analysis
Urge 6 is a signed screen print in colours produced by the critically acclaimed American artist and designer, KAWS in 2020. The print depicts KAWS’ much loved cartoon character, Companion. Companion is rendered in a bright blue and dominates the centre of the composition. Despite being the focal point of the piece, Companion is surrounded by gloved hands which attempt to hide his face.
The print can be seen alongside nine other screen prints which compose the Urge collection. In this collection, KAWS depicts Companion surrounded by gloved hands. The colours and arrangement of the hands are different and change with each print, meaning no two compositions are alike. The hands surrounding Companion feature crosses which mimic Companion’s crossed out eyes. Crosses are a trademark feature of KAWS’ visual language and are often used in his graphic designs. Companion’s crossed out eyes bring an air of morbidity to the prints which contrasts with the bright and vibrant colours KAWS uses throughout the collection.
Companion is one of KAWS’ oldest cartoon characters and is identifiable by his inflated skull and crossbones head, crossed out eyes, Mickey Mouse-like body and gloved hands. KAWS is well known for creating a stock of cartoon characters who reappear throughout his artworks. Alongside Companion, KAWS often incorporates the characters Accomplice, Chum and Bendy into his prints.
