This 2011 digital print by David Hockney is signed and issued in an edition of 10. Dated 30 May, it shows a pink track through dense late-spring foliage, with a triangular road sign warning of horse riders beside a bank of cow parsley. It comes from The Arrival of Spring in 2011 series.
The track runs diagonally from the lower right into a shaded tunnel of greens, with a reddish-mauve surface that stands out against the leaves. At the left a warning sign shows the silhouette of a rider on a horse inside a red triangle, one of the few man-made objects in the series. Beside it, cream-coloured cow parsley is drawn in dots and loose line. Above it a thick mauve branch arches across the top of the picture. The foliage on every side is layered and varied, from bright mid greens to dark teal. The sign is a precise and slightly humorous detail that anchors the picture in the English lane, it also marks a point of contrast with the more abstract passages of colour around it. Hockney often included everyday markers in his Yorkshire work. Here it gives scale to a scene in which the vegetation otherwise fills the frame.
