20 x 27cm, Edition of 125, Etching

Sam and Jay’s Birds (2004) is an etching by Tracey Emin, featuring a single bird perches on a thin, leafed branch, sketched in a few spare lines that drift across the empty space. The composition is quiet and open, with the artist’s initials signed discreetly in the lower corner. Originally produced as a Christmas edition for Jay Jopling and Sam Taylor-Wood, the print was published by White Cube, London.
Emin’s approach here is pared back but deliberate. The scene is slight, yet the bird is rendered with care but not sentimentality, its presence more observed than idealised. There’s an unforced gentleness to the image, one that suggests pause, attention, and a kind of emotional restraint. Though nature is not always the focus of Emin’s work, this piece aligns with her broader interest in moments of stillness, intimacy and transient connection. The image feels personal without being self-exposing, folded into a practice shaped by touch, memory, and the spaces in between.
