About Intermuseum Conservation Association (ICA)

The Intermuseum Conservation Association (ICA) serves as a pivotal institution in the preservation of art and material culture. Established in 1952 by six Midwestern museum directors, it emerged as the first non-profit regional art conservation center in the United States, setting a precedent for the field. ICA’s mission extends beyond mere conservation; it encompasses advocacy and education, aiming to protect and enrich our shared cultural heritage for present and future generations.

Situated in Cleveland’s vibrant Clark-Fulton neighbourhood, within the Pivot Center for Art, Dance, and Expression, ICA stands as a beacon of cultural preservation. The organization offers unparalleled access to conservation expertise, servicing a broad spectrum of stewards from various sectors, including arts, culture, education, and public and private entities. This inclusive approach ensures that communities are empowered to preserve their cultural treasures, strengthening societal bonds through shared history and heritage.

ICA’s foundational role in art conservation has not only preserved countless works but also inspired the establishment of similar centres nationwide, thanks to the National Endowment for the Arts. As a model of excellence and innovation in conservation, ICA continues to advance its mission through a dynamic blend of services, programs, and community engagement, making it a cornerstone of cultural preservation and education.
