Queen Beatrix Of The Netherlands (F. & S.II.340) depicts the Dutch monarch adorned with her tiara. Andy Warhol has employed his signature style of screen printing for this monumental image. He has applied a blue tone to the Queen’s image and over layed yellow, pink, and green colour blocking in this signed print. Queen Beatrix ascended to the throne in 1980 and reigned until her abdication in 2013. Warhol produced this image five years into her reign. This edition of 40 comes from the larger series, Reigning Queens.
The series Reigning Queens features four queens regnant in 1985: Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland, Queen Margarethe of Denmark, and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Produced in the last years of his life, Warhol’s Reigning Queens draws on his lifelong interest in feminine beauty and fame as well as power. This series evokes his early work featuring famous stars likeMarilyn Monroe orIngrid Bergman as well as images of political figures likeChairman Mao orVladimir Lenin. The series treats official royal portraits as a celebrity headshots, equating political power with fame.
