American artist, Frank Stella, forged a path through abstraction thanks to his geometric minimalism. Emerging in the late 1950s with a series of paintings composed of only black paint on unprimed canvas, Stella set the stage for a storied career by rejecting the traditional, passionate brushstrokes of abstraction. Despite introducing more colour and dynamism into his later works through the use of geometric shapes, the artist still favoured a simplicity which set him apart from his contemporaries. Stella became the youngest ever artist to have a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 1970 which pays testament to his reputation - one which he has continued to uphold to this day.
