Marlboro, a signed limited edition screen print released in 2014 in an edition of 200, is the work of French street artist Invader, known for his Space Invader characters which he ‘invades’ buildings in cities around the world with. In Marlboro, the artist recreates the front of a Marlboro red packet of cigarettes in his signature pixelated, low-res style. The front of the packet is reduced to chunky pixels seven across by ten down. Despite this low-res image, the branding of Marlboro is unmistakable.
Invader rose to fame in the 1990s as he graffitied his Space Invader characters onto buildings around Paris. This street art project has now turned global and Invader’s pixelated, retro characters, inspired by the video game of the same title the artist played in the 1980s, are instantly recognisable.
