61 x 86cm, Edition of 40, Screenprint

Imagine You Are Driving is a screen print, released in edition of 40 in 1991, executed by British artist Julian Opie. Imagine You Are Driving depicts a road from the perspective of driving a car. Executed in Opie’s distinctive, minimalist and graphic style, this screen print is aesthetically cartoon-like.
Opie fuses numerous disparate sources of inspiration together in his work, from both ‘high’ and ‘low’ artistic influences, such as Japanese manga and woodblock printing, Egyptian hieroglyphics and Pop Art.
Aiming to interrogate how images are perceived and understood, Opie reduces images to their most essential elements, whether it be a figurative artwork or a landscape. Opie’s style has become more painterly in recent years, with shadows and highlights visible. Yet, in Imagine You Are Driving, such qualities are not present as Opie uses solid planes of colour and minimal detail in his composition.
