Sara Dancing In A Sparkly Top is a digital print by the British artist Julian Opie, released in 2008 in an edition of 45. In this monochromatic work the subject, Sara, is visibly swaying owing to the highly blurred contours of her figure.
Opie draws on graphics from contemporary life, including computer graphics to road signs. Opie’s resulting signature style is a stripped-down vocabulary of schematic lines and blocks of colour. However, Sara Dancing In A Sparkly Top is monochrome, emphasising the simplified elements of his composition. Often using inkjet printing techniques to form multiples of his artworks, Opie revels in the materiality of these hypermodern mediums. Opie favours such mediums for their lack of subjectivity and individuality, which dissolves the self of the artist and places the work of the art to the front stage.
