Biography

Born in 1868 in Cuiseaux, Saône-et-Loire, Vuillard was deeply influenced by the aesthetic movements of his time, particularly the decorative arts. His early life in Paris, where he moved with his family at a young age, was pivotal in shaping his artistic direction. Vuillard studied at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian, where he developed a style characterised by its focus on the intimate and the everyday.

Vuillard's trajectory saw a departure from the early influence of Impressionism towards a more symbolic and decorative style. This shift is evident in his works from the 1890s, which are characterised by a rich palette, flattened perspectives, and a focus on the interplay of patterns and textures. His paintings from this era, such as The Green Interior or Woman In A Striped Dress, exude a sense of silence and introspection.

Throughout his career, Vuillard also ventured into the public sphere, accepting commissions for large-scale decorative panels, theatre designs, and portraits of Parisian society figures. These works often retained his signature style but showcased a broader scope of subjects and settings, demonstrating his versatility as an artist.

Vuillard's impact on the art world was multifaceted. His commitment to capturing the poetry of everyday life and his innovative approach to composition and colour influenced subsequent generations of artists. Despite his penchant for the private and the personal, Vuillard's work resonates with universal themes of familiarity and nostalgia, cementing his legacy as a painter of the human experience.
