George Condo’s Untitled 12 is an etching that depicts a sitter with jewellery and a hat on. The work is an edition of 55, signed to the bottom right and numbered to the bottom left of the etching.
Untitled 12 is a densely packed composition that depicts a sitter amongst seemingly dense visual clutter. Condo uses hatching in the background of the work to create a shaded effect in the etching. The sitter almost disappears into the busyness of the painting. For instance, on their neck and the left side of their face the artist has used hatching.
The technical approach of the artist is very similar to that of another of his 1989 etchings. A second work, named just Untitled depicts a sitter before a plain background. The density of the etching and the ornamentation of the sitter is afforded great attention by the artist. Similarly, the approach of Condo towards the depiction of the sitter is indicative of the similar approach that he took in both of these etchings. Furthermore, the sitter in Untitled 12 is ornamented by jewellery and a patterned shirt. The necklace around the sitter’s neck stands out as easily identifiable decoration amidst a cluttered composition. Untitled 12 ought to be categorised alongside Untitled as a particular type of etching that was produced by Condo in the late 1980s.
