About Institut für Papierrestaurierung

Founded by Prof. Mag. Karin K. Troschke, the Institut für Papierrestaurierung at Schönbrunn Castle stands as a beacon of excellence in paper conservation. This prestigious institution, emerging from a vision to offer in-depth training across all domains of paper restoration including graphics, archives, books, and photography, has evolved into a collaborative hub for experts and learners alike. Since its inception in 1996, the institute has not only facilitated the enhancement of skills through internships and seminars but also led groundbreaking research through involvement in significant EU projects like “LACLEPA,” “Wall & Paper,” and “Historic Wallpapers.”

The institute's dedication to preserving cultural heritage is exemplified by notable projects such as the restoration of Chinese wallpaper in Schönbrunn Palace's Blue Salon and the safeguarding of Klimt's artworks at the Burgtheater. Its role as a pioneer is further solidified by Daguerreobase, a public platform that unites over 25,000 European daguerreotypes, marking it as a vital resource for researchers and enthusiasts worldwide.

Celebrating over a quarter-century of contributions to the field, the Institut für Papierrestaurierung continues to be a testament to the enduring value of preserving history through paper conservation, grounded in tradition yet always looking towards the future.
