About The Conservation Center

The Conservation Center, nestled in the heart of Chicago's Kinzie Industrial Corridor, epitomises excellence in the field of art and heirloom conservation. As the largest private art conservation laboratory in the nation, The Center boasts over four decades of unparalleled expertise in preserving the integrity of diverse collections. From prestigious museums and private collections to corporate and insurance entities, The Center caters to a wide array of clients, offering meticulous care across various mediums including paintings, photographs, textiles, and sculptures.

Founded in 1983 by visionary Barry Bauman and supported by the dedication of Marshall Field V, The Center has evolved from a modest team of painting conservators to a robust staff of 30 specialists across numerous disciplines. This growth was marked by a significant relocation in 2012 to a revitalised 19th-century warehouse, transformed into a cutting-edge conservation laboratory by Studio Gang Architects.

Adhering to the American Institute for Conservation's ethical guidelines, The Conservation Center prioritises non-invasive, reversible treatments. Its philosophy of 'less is more' ensures that each piece's original intent is preserved using archival-grade materials. This commitment to excellence, coupled with a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing, positions The Center as a leader in the preservation of cultural and personal treasures for generations to come.
