Biography

Born on 5 January 1896, in Yaguajay, Cuba, Pelaez was a trailblazing artist whose work became synonymous with the Cuban Avant-Garde movement. She studied at the San Alejandro Academy, where she was influenced by her mentor, Leopoldo Romañach, and the Impressionist works that permeated her early education. Pelaez lived in Paris for a period, where she immersed herself in the Cubist movement, creating a style characterised by vibrant colours and intricate architectural motifs.

Upon returning to Cuba in 1934, Pelaez used her art to explore femininity and cultural heritage. Her works reflect the tapestry of Cuban life, merging traditional elements with Modernist techniques. Throughout her career, Pelaez participated in numerous exhibitions internationally, solidifying her status as an influencial figure in Cuban Modern Art.

Pelaez's career was marked by several accolades and exhibitions that showcased her artistic development. Pelaez's exploration of still-life through vibrant prints further distinguished her in the art world, with her unique compositions often featuring intricate patterns and bold colour schemes drawn from her cultural roots.

Her participation in prestigious exhibitions, including the Bienal de Venecia, highlighted her status as a pivotal Cuban Avant-Garde artist. Pelaez's work has been collected by major institutions, such as the Museum of Modern Art.

On 8 April 1968, Peláez died, leaving a vibrant legacy of art that blended modernist aesthetics with Cuban cultural motifs.
