Meaning & Analysis
Double Mickey Mouse is a signed screen print on Arches 88 paper produced by the renowned Pop Artist Andy Warhol in 1981. The print comes in a small edition size of 25 and shows two mirror images of the beloved cartoon character, Mickey Mouse. The repetition of imagery within a print is a staple element of Warhol’s Pop Art aesthetic and is seen in other prints such as Double Elvis (1963). In this print, Mickey Mouse stands charismatically with his arms behind his back and his right leg pointing out in front of him as he gazes cheekily to the right of the composition.
Warhol renders the cartoon character against a colourful background composed of geometric shapes which captures Warhol’s signature colour-blocking technique. Another characteristic feature of Warhol’s visual style that the artist employs in this print is the use of bold gestural lines. Mickey’s figure is delineated through layers of black, green and white lines. The layered lines bring a sense of dynamism to the print which implies Mickey is being captured mid-motion.
Warhol was fascinated by American consumer culture and popular culture and was often inspired to produce prints of notable icons such as famous cartoon characters or Hollywood stars. Double Mickey Mouse is the second print that Warhol made of Mickey Mouse. Warhol’s first depiction of the popular character, Mickey Mouse, can be found in his Myths collection which the artist made in 1981.
