What happens when one of Britain’s greatest artists picks up an iPad? In 2011, David Hockney returned to his native Yorkshire and began documenting the arrival of spring almost day by day, creating more than 100 digital drawings of the landscape around Woldgate.
The Arrival of Spring in 2011, marked a pivotal moment in Hockney’s career: a homecoming to the British landscape and a radical shift from analogue to digital.
Using a stylus, Hockney captured the changing landscape with an immediacy that traditional media couldn’t always offer. Bare branches gave way to blossom, ice melted from country roads and the countryside slowly transformed from winter into spring. From the Royal Academy’s A Bigger Picture exhibition to the debate surrounding his digital works, discover how Hockney found an entirely new way to make us see the world around us.
In this video, print specialist Grace Brown explores how Hockney used new technology to revisit one of art’s oldest genre, and how his iPad drawings pushed the boundaries of what printmaking could be.
