Meaning & Analysis
This 2011 digital print by David Hockney is signed and issued in an edition of 10. Dated 2 June, it shows a wooded track in full summer leaf and belongs to The Arrival of Spring in 2011, the iPad series that follows the East Yorkshire landscape through the seasons.
By early June the open lanes of the earlier drawings have given way to a tunnel of green. A sunlit path runs into the picture between tall tree trunks, with a squared brown block of stonework or brick at the left and a stretch of red and pink undergrowth in the foreground. Hockney builds the foliage from small dots and short strokes in several greens, which produce a shimmering effect. He places warm browns and reds against the greens so that the cool palette does not become uniform. The scene is enclosed and shaded where the earlier views in the series were open, a comparison that is useful for reading the group as a sequence. The date, as with the others, anchors the drawing to a particular moment in the season.
Hockney’s East Yorkshire work, painted and drawn after his return in the mid-2000s, takes repeated observation of the same landscape as its method. The 2011 iPad drawings are the most systematic expression of that approach.
