Screenprint, 1971
Signed Print Edition of 75
H 58cm x W 77cm
This signed screenprint from 1971 is a rare, limited edition of 75 from Howard Hodgkin’s Indian Views series. The horizontal print presents to the viewer a delicate and simple abstract representation of concentric yellow rectangles closing in on a hombre blue rectangle.
Indian View A belongs to a series of works, Indian Views, where Hodgkin captured the fleeting memory of his train views as he travelled across the South Asian subcontinent. Indian View A, as the title suggests, was the first image the artist produced upon returning to England – he almost never, in fact, made his artworks in loco, preferring instead to reminisce within the walls of his all-white Bloomsbury studio in London.
While Hodgkin purposefully did not disclose much about the image, leaving it up to the viewer to fantasise about its possible meanings, the blue patch of colour that dominates the image seems to suggest a seaside view as glimpsed from the train.
