Cityscape, executed by Julian Opie in 1991 and released in an edition of 40, depicts a street scene from a busy urban metropolis. Figures, executed in Opie’s iconic minimalist style, walk towards the viewer, as if crossing a busy road. The background, composed of numerous buildings, are similarly reductive in style, composed of simple geometric shapes.
Opie typically brings time honoured artistic movements into the 21st century, such as Japanese woodblock printing and Egyptian hieroglyphics, as he continues to push the boundaries of traditional ‘artistic’ practice. Through a refined, graphic style, Opie distils the visual information of everyday life and reality into a universal language of signs and symbols.
