Architect is a signed digital print made by the acclaimed British artist Julian Opie in 2014. The print comes in an edition size of 50 and shows an anonymous female figure wearing a long-sleeved shirt and trousers. The woman has a backpack on and is captured striding across the composition. The woman’s figure is outlined using thick black lines and set against a bright coral coloured backdrop.
The woman in the print does not have a face, meaning she can only be identified by the clothes she is wearing. Opie often depicts faceless figures in his artworks, capturing the artist’s interest in ordinary people. Unlike Andy Warhol, who Opie is often compared to, most of Opie’s artworks use anonymous figures as their subjects. Opie has, however, been commissioned to produce portraits of famous icons, such as the Britpop band Blur.
Architect can be seen alongside a variety of prints in Opie’s Walking In London collection. Each print in the collection depicts a person belonging to a different profession. Every figure is captured walking somewhere and none of them are looking straight-on out of the composition. Opie often produces artworks of anonymous, faceless figures walking. Other notable collections are the Walking In The Rain collection.
