Meaning & Analysis
Student is a signed digital print made by the renowned British artist Julian Opie in 2013. The print comes in an edition size of 50 and shows a young man wearing a blue jacket and grey trousers. The man is wearing headphones and carries a rucksack. As the title of the print indicates, the figure depicted in this print is a student, going about his daily life in the city of London. The figure is rendered from side-on, captured in motion, striding across the composition. Set against a pale blue backdrop, Opie employs his clever technique of duplicating the man’s legs and blurring them, producing the illusion of movement.
Student captures the essence of Opie’s distinct visual style which is characterised by his use of simple forms, thick outlines and blocks of flat colour. The man depicted in this print is not given a face, a signature element of Opie’s visual language. Opie often produces artworks of anonymous figures walking around urban cities.
