The original painting of Our Town is currently on view at Touchstones in Rochdale. This work is emblematic of Lowry’s style that blends realism and landscapes from his own memory with imaginary elements and subtly humorous features. It was for this reason that he called them dreamscapes. As seen on this painting, he expresses the bleak nature of urban, modern reality through a unique, limited colour pallet, only using black, red, flake white and yellow ochre. Touches of humour can be detected in this painting in the form of the three characters standing out from the crowd of people, one being particularly fat. Lowry is a master of creating compositions of a large crowd, capturing different moments of individual movement and manufacturing an entire narrative that unfolds around the urban mass.
