22 x 20cm, Edition of 20, Etching

Lucian Freud’s Head Of Man II is a late 20th-century etching depicting the performance artist and fashion designer, Leigh Bowery. The head is shown in partial profile, the gaze cast downward, lending the work a sense of inward focus. The densely layered lines give weight to the surface, creating a textured interplay between flesh and form.
This etching reflects Freud’s sustained interest in the human figure as a subject of close scrutiny. The features are heavily worked, with tone and shadow used to carve out the structure of the face. The sitter’s expression resists easy interpretation, held somewhere between detachment and introspection. As in much of Freud’s work, his approach here is direct and unyielding, favouring exacting observation over sentiment.
