A Feeling of Shock (2022) by Tracey Emin, depicts a figure almost dissolving into the page - its outline blurred, one side heavily shaded, the other scarcely there. It forms part of the A Journey to Death series, created during a period of reflection on illness, ageing, and the limits of the body.
A Feeling of Shock carries an uneven intensity. The face is blocked in with thick marks that obscure its features, while the body is loosely drawn, slipping in and out of definition. It’s not so much a portrait as a trace; part presence, part disappearance. Emin’s use of line feels improvised, almost reluctant, as if the image has emerged in stages and is still in flux. It’s this tension, between clarity and collapse, that gives the work its charge.
