Created by Tracey Emin in 2013, this black ink lithograph was released in an edition of 250 and captures an RNLI lifeboat. The moored boat is rendered with simple lines at the centre of the composition, with human figures at the helm depicted in a darker shade of blue. In the same hue is a figure standing in the left foreground of the work, and the shadow case by the boat on the ground to the right.
Fascinated with the coast since her childhood, growing up in Margate, RNLI12-001 reveals Emin’s connection to her seaside hometown. The RNLI lifeboat, from which the work takes its title, is populated by figures delineated by simple lines. The lively presence of these figures in the work showcases Emin’s respect for this lifeline of the coast.
