Tiny Gold Hearts (2010) by Tracey Emin features a spare line drawing of a female figure, her arms raised above her head, alongside scrawled text that reads “Tiny Gold Hearts.” A smudge of black ink appears nearby, disrupting the expanse of paper. The work typifies Emin’s intimate, fragmentary style, where drawing and writing fold into one another.
In Tiny Gold Hearts there’s a sense of distance and immediacy at play - both in the awkward pose of the figure and the way the handwritten phrase hovers beside her, like a thought half-spoken. The text doesn’t explain, it punctuates. As in much of Emin’s work, meaning is never pinned down, but instead suggested through gesture, allusion and repetition. The small scale and faint mark-making feel emotionally loaded. Tiny Gold Hearts doesn’t announce itself loudly; it lingers. It speaks to the artist’s ongoing interest in memory, bodily experience, and the quiet residue of feeling.
