31 x 40cm, Edition of 100, Etching

Printed on yellow-tinted Japanese Atsuki paper, And Then You Left Me was executed by Tracey Emin in 2008 and released in an edition size of 100. Forming part of our Nude Self-Portraits collection, Emin depicts herself in a state of despair, lying on the floor with her arms outstretched in desperation for the person that has deserted her.
Emin has continually used her art to both document and confront issues she faces in her personal life. And Then You Left Me is an emotionally harrowing work. Despite Emin’s relatively simple handling of line, she still evokes a great sense of desperation and sadness in the pose of her figure, and her gaping mouth.
As the title of the work would suggest, Emin captures here the moment in which she was abandoned by a lover. Even though her work is often intensely personal, works like this attest to the universality of Emin’s subject matter and the experiences she portrays.
