Meaning & Analysis

This etching was executed by Tracey Emin in 2016 and forms part of the Nude Self-Portraits collection. Across the centre of the composition, Emin’s nude body is rendered in black ink, with her face completely obscured by expressive mark-making. A few lines delineate the bed and pillow that her body rests on. Above her figure is a wash of black ink, and the negative space created by this wash compliments the feminine curvature of her body.

This intimate reclining nude showcases Emin’s unrelenting study of her own nude form. The bed, liking Emin’s most recognisable and iconic subject, is delineated here in a few fluid lines. A dramatic wash of black ink concentrates the viewer’s attention to the nude at the centre of the composition. As is typical of her Nude Self-Portraits, Emin has scrawled out her own face.
