Key Takeaways

In the studio with David Hockney’s The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire, 2nd June 2011.

In this video, MyArtBroker print specialist Grace Brown evaluates one of the final works in Hockney’s celebrated Arrival of Spring series. Back in his native Yorkshire, Hockney returned almost every other day to the same Roman road through the woods at Woldgate. He recorded the landscape as it moved from the frosty days of January to the edge of summer. Dated 2 June, this iPad drawing sits on the cusp between spring and summer, and its colours are luminous.

Grace looks closely at how Hockney used the iPad to work at two scales at once. From a distance the composition holds together as a whole, but up close it shows intricate mark-making, from the flowers woven through the scene to unexpected touches of magenta set against lilac. Made when the artist was 73, the print brings together Hockney’s constant technical innovation in printmaking and his lasting interest in place, homecoming and the passing of time.
