Shadows I (F. & S. II.204) is a signed screen print with diamond dust on Arches 88 paper made by the renowned Pop artist, Andy Warhol. Produced in 1979 when Warhol was 50 years old, this is one of his later works which marks a radical departure from the artist’s signature Pop Art style which is characterised by his use of bright and bold colours and repeated icons and motifs from popular culture. In this print, Warhol attempts to capture the shadows produced by a desk lamp in his studio. The abstract print shows a deep blue shadow rendered against a vibrant yellow backdrop.
The print is one of six screen prints from Warhol’s Shadows I collection. Each print in the collection is based on the patterns produced by shadows, reflecting Warhol’s interest in the relationship between light and darkness. The print was made using a sponge mop which left traces of thick lines across the painted surface of the print, drawing attention to the texture of the artwork. Shadows I is part of a wider project that Warhol started in 1978. The artist painted 102 paintings of shadows which he exhibited at the Heiner Friedrich Gallery in 1979. Warhol then went on to publish five portfolios of prints, all depicting shadows, inspired by his Shadows paintings.
The Shadow paintings and Warhol’s large portfolio of prints differ from many of the artist's other collections as the style is looser and more abstract. Other abstract artworks produced by Warhol include his Sunset and Camouflage prints.
