49 x 66cm, Edition of 295, Giclée print

Dylan ventures into America's pastoral heartland with his 2017 Kentucky Pathway, a signed giclée print from an edition of 295. Unlike the commercial bustle of his other The Beaten Path works, this piece contemplates the quiet beauty of the lesser-travelled rural America, where wooden fences guide the eye along sun-dappled country roads.
Kentucky Pathway shifts focus from the commercial establishments and human spaces seen in much of The Beaten Path to the pastoral elements that define rural American landscape. Much of Dylan’s work focuses on the balance between temporary and permanent, embarking on journeys and setting down roots, just as the central subject of this work - the car - continues its journey down this long-established road.
The pathway motif carries profound symbolic significance more broadly in American culture, connecting to literary traditions from Thoreau's walking philosophy to Frost's diverging paths, where roads become metaphors for life choices and spiritual journey. Dylan's choice of road for this piece emphasises rural infrastructure that predates extensive modernisation - an unpaved curbless surface, mature trees, and traditional fencing. The green palette, somewhat unusual across The Beaten Path series, creates associations with growth, renewal, and the enduring presence of natural systems. Kentucky's landscape, renowned for horse farms and scenic beauty, embodies many Americans' idealised vision of pastoral life, where slower rhythms contrast sharply with urban experiences.
