97 x 94cm, Edition of 195, Screenprint
Bob Dylan's 2017 Late In The Day, Houston Street, a signed screenprint from an edition of 195, captures the iconic façade of Katz's Delicatessen in bright, late afternoon light. Part of Dylan's The Beaten Path series, the work transforms his original paintings into bold, saturated prints that celebrate authentic New York culture over tourist landmarks.
Late In The Day, Houston Street showcases the legendary delicatessen's distinctive red and purple “KATZ'S” signage and characteristic Lower East Side architecture at 205 East Houston Street. Dylan's silkscreen technique is vibrantly saturated with colour, maintaining crisp, clear definition. The multiple layers of signage reflect the dense, layered quality of New York street life, affording this print a sense of urban realism. From 1973-74, Dylan maintained a recording studio just blocks away from Katz’s at 124 West Houston Street, where he created songs for his legendary Blood on the Tracks album during a period of both personal and artistic change. This context transforms the seemingly simple, faithful streetscape into a meditation on memory, continuity, and the passage of time.
Dylan's decision to depict this moment “late in the day” mirrors the themes of reflection and tradition that resonate throughout his work. The establishment, serving the Lower East Side since 1888 as an institution of American Jewish culture, represents the authentic immigrant experience that Dylan seeks to document. Within The Beaten Path series, the work exemplifies his philosophy of capturing real life rather than manufactured experiences, finding significance in neighbourhood institutions where genuine American culture unfolds daily.
