79 x 112cm, Edition of 195, Screenprint

A deliberately working-class perspective on Manhattan’s skyline, Bob Dylan's 2017 New York Skyline, Seen From Queens, a signed screenprint from an edition of 195, forms part of The Beaten Path series. It captures Dylan’s fascination with the beauty in authentic urban life, rather than the glitz and glamour of New York as seen in films and the media.
New York Skyline, Seen From Queens depicts the Manhattan skyline bathed in dramatic sunset colours, with Dylan's characteristic technique of rendering skies that are more often red, orange, and yellow than blue. The Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges stand as dark silhouettes against the brightness of a setting sun. Viewed from Queens, this perspective reflects Dylan's attraction to the Lower East Side, Coney Island, and the outer boroughs - areas that tend to be well-known and well-loved by locals, rather than tourists.
The work demonstrates Dylan's skill at reducing the three-dimensional down to two dimensions, without losing any depth. His colours are characteristically rich and layered, despite the fact that Dylan rarely mixed them together. This outer borough viewpoint, at once general and specific, embodies The Beaten Path series' exploration of movement and journey, and, more broadly, the Beat Generation's celebration of travel.
