41 x 61cm, Edition of 295, Giclée print

The notorious intersection of 41st Street and 8th Avenue comes alive in Dylan's 2020 Terminal Bar, a signed screenprint in an edition of 295, which captures the vibrant energy of one of New York City's most infamous establishments, directly across from Port Authority Bus Terminal. The legendary dive bar survived from the 1950s through 1982, transforming from an Irish bar to an integral part of the gritty Times Square scene.
Terminal Bar is an energetic, colourful, chaotic portrayal of an establishment immortalised in the film Taxi Driver. Despite its cinematic feature, the bar is typically well-known amongst locals but often overlooked by tourists. Dylan's use of vivid neon hues and loose brushwork characteristic of Expressionism, rather than the Impressionist influences prevalent in the rest of his The Beaten Path series, enhances the atmosphere of the bustling scene. The dynamic interplay of light and shadow created by colourful illuminated signs draws the viewer into this gathering place for society's outcasts in one of the city's most dismal intersections. Dylan's technique parallels the emotional intensity found in his musical compositions, translating his lyrical narratives into visual form. The work resonates with the cultural context of urban living in the late 20th century, where nightlife served as a backdrop for social interaction and artistic expression, celebrating the authentic experiences found in spaces often overlooked by mainstream culture.
